THE GOLDSTER MAGAZINE SHOW

The Goldster Magazine was a programme on the Goldster's online health & fitness club.  For my monthly interviews, I talked with inspirational people, both famous and unknown, who have turned hardship or challenges into life-enhancing achievements through adventure and exploration,  learning as much myself as my audience as I try to navigate into their mindset.

Originally conceived to be of benefit in helping stabilise the development of dementia in those over 65, Goldster evolved into a much broader online membership platform created to inspire and make accessible its  content for anyone over 50, regardless of their health. The objective was to make leading a more active, interesting and ultimately healthy life more attractive as well as aabn ccessible option.

Tony Loughran’s official title is global risk specialist. More simply put, he’s in the business of saving lives and has 30 years of experience in not just protecting others but also keeping himself alive in some highly volatile environments.

Born in Liverpool, Tony’s childhood was tough but one which inured him sufficiently to pass selection for the Royal Marines where he flourished as a commando medic. His inbuilt drive to help his teammates shone through and forged a natural pathway into a profession of safety and security expert, a role that played to all his strengths in protecting people in fast-moving and highly dangerous situations.

Working for the BBC in this capacity, Tony trained, equipped and protected war correspondents and journalists risking their own lives to bring world news into our homes. Behind the scenes, he has been responsible for saving many of the lives of those familiar faces we see on our screens, hear on the radio or whose news stories we read. This marked the start of his company ZeroRisk International from his new home in Australia, with his business expanding to include to protection of war aid workers, business people and hapless citizens caught up in the sudden onset of war or terrorist attacks the world over. One day, that might be you.

Having had a few close calls in the world of exploration in extreme environments, I will be delving into his mindset to find out what equips this ex-marine commander to survive, sometimes against the odds, illustrated with some gripping stories.

A case of my expedition boot being on the other foot recently, as instead of my usual role as Goldsters Interviewer, it was my turn to be interviewed, happily by the inimitable Humphrey Hawksley. Guests joining in were the best-selling crime novelist David Mark whose dark stories belie the author's warmth and northern humour, and Harry Bucknall - ex-Coldstream Guardsman, these days best described as a C21st pilgrim of sorts, walking huge distances (we're talking thousands of miles) to cathedrals driven by a compulsion, and enjoyment, of writing his journeys up - in a most engaging way which reflects his ebullient and affable character. Ably steered by Humphrey it was all great fun with the focus on purpose in life which needless to say with three such diverse characters was the brief but the conversations went off track most of the time!
