It was an absolute delight to speak recently at St Mary’s Ascot Leavers Day.  With 30 people in the marquee, I gather some 1000 further people-watching in various bubbles outside the marquee and online.

I really enjoyed giving a talk to such a receptive audience. Handing out an assortment of prizes after the talk, I was astounded, and not a little humbled, by the astonishing array of achievements of these upper VI girls – from playing sport for regional teams, community work, endless grade 8s in music and as many again getting places into Oxford or Cambridge and other top unis. Not a whisper of A levels in Needlepoint or domestic science like in my time! And yet they all seemed so happily loyal to one another and not a hint of arrogance, just really comfortable in themselves and not a whiff of a public school clone.

It was also a very useful fashion experience as I could see far more clearly than any copy of Harpers what’s in vogue for this summer. I’ll share the catwalk secret: Floaty chiffon dresses and pale beige strappy, stonking high espadrilles.

Wishing all the 2021 Leavers all the best as they begin their adventures in the adult world.
